The Web’s Enneagram Glossary of Terms

This is, obviously, a work in progress. As terms come up that you may not know right off the bat, I’ll attempt to explain them here or at least refer you to a good source.

A.

The Arica School (also known as the Arica Institute, which is its incorporated educational organization, or simply as Arica) is a human potential movement group founded in 1968 by Bolivian-born philosopher Oscar Ichazo (born in 1931). It is named for the city of Arica, Chile, where Ichazo once lived and where he led an intensive months-long training in 1970 and 1971 before settling in the United States where the Arica Institute (incorporated in 1971) has since been headquartered.

The Fourth Way is the name G. I. Gurdjieff gave to his ideas and teachings, which are also sometimes called “The Work” or “The Gurdjieff Work”.

Forer effect (also called personal validation fallacy or the Barnum effect after P. T. Barnum) is the observation that individuals will give high accuracy ratings to descriptions of their personality that supposedly are tailored specifically for them, but are in fact vague and general enough to apply to a wide range of people. The Forer effect can provide a partial explanation for the widespread acceptance of some pseudosciences such as astrology and fortune telling, as well as many types of personality tests.

G.

Georges Ivanovich Gurdjieff (January 13, 1872 – October 29, 1949), was a Greek-Armenian mystic and spiritual teacher who initially gained public recognition as a teacher of sacred dance. After attracting pupils and disciples of whom a number were already persons of some distinction, he established a school for spiritual development called The Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man. He claimed that the teachings he brought to the West from his own experiences and early travels expressed the truth found in other ancient religions and wisdom teachings relating to self-awareness in one’s daily life and humanity’s place in the universe. It might be summed up by the title of his third series of writings: Life is Real Only Then, When ‘I Am’. His complete series of books is entitled “All And Everything”.
